This year, Dementia Action Week takes place 16-22 May in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Dementia podcast

Professor John O’Brien

With this being a key opportunity in the calendar to raise awareness about dementia, we are delighted to share a new podcast with Professor John O’Brien, the NIHR National Specialty Lead for Dementia.

In this podcast, Professor O’Brien explains what dementia is, the different types of dementia, why dementia rates are increasing and what research has achieved so far.

The show notes for this podcast provide some additional background information as well as the transcript.

In addition, a new blog about dementia research looks at research studies that have concluded and others that are ongoing.

Engaging people with a dementia diagnosis

We welcome people of all ages to sign up to Join Dementia Research, but we are particularly keen to engage people with a dementia diagnosis.

So this year, we’re using the opportunity to raise awareness of the service with healthcare professionals and researchers in a number of ways:

We already have over 50,000 people signed up to Join Dementia Research, which is great, but we need more people – particularly those with a diagnosis – to get involved and to help improve diagnosis, treatment and care.

With 900,000 people currently living with dementia in the UK, the role of research had never been more important. So we encourage you to tell your family, friends and colleagues about Join Dementia Research.

A reminder that you can keep up to date with all the latest happenings from Join Dementia Research by following us on Facebook and Twitter.

Dementia Awareness Week will run from 30 May – 5 June in Scotland.
