John Spencer championing Join Dementia Research at Demfest15
Join Dementia Research Wessex Champion, John Spencer, attended ‘Demfest15’, organised by ‘romdag’ (Romsey dementia group) on Sunday 6th Sept 2015, held at the Sir Harold Hillier Gardens, Romsey, Hants. The event was opened by Her Honour, Jane Bonvin, Deputy Lieutenant of Hampshire.
Some 15 other Dementia related support organisations were in attendance and, like Join Dementia Research, displayed banners and brochures at allocated tables to over 600 attendees comprising professionals, volunteers, people with dementia and their carers and members of the public, largely drawn from those visiting the gardens for the day. Networking was ‘intense’ and information disseminated and exchanged.
“I was able to offer support to a number of carers who had their spouses with them as well as those with a more distant connection to people with dementia, hopefully giving them some benefit from my own experiences. So much more rewarding than giving straight talks about Join Dementia Research and why one should sign up. Around 20 gave clear indication of intention to sign up to Join Dementia Research.
There was a broad programme of speakers including Professor Clive Holmes from the Memory Assessment and Research Centre (MARC), Southampton whom I have done some research programmes with and who spoke on my TV presentation after the Join Dementia Research February launch.
The event also had a light programme of singing and music and a few entertainment stalls creating a family festival atmosphere under perfect weather conditions. I have volunteered to attend next year.”
Anyone, 18 or over, can sign up to Join Dementia Research to be matched to appropriate research studies. Please help us spread the word.
