Book of You
Book of You is a unique new study that is now recruiting through Join Dementia Research. The study is looking at whether a ‘digital life storybook’ (a collection of photos, words and narrations that reflect important aspects of a person’s life) can have a positive effect on the lives of people with dementia and their carers.
We caught up with the Study co-ordinator, Laura O’Philbin to find out more:
What are the main aims of the study?
The first aim of this study is to look at whether or not digital life story work has a positive impact on wellbeing for people with dementia and their carers. We want to look at how participants respond to life story work over time in terms of interest, involvement and enjoyment.
What does it involve for a participant?
This study can be done from the comfort of your own home. Participants will be able to create their own digital life storybook incorporating pictures, words, text, and music and then use it to reminisce. Each time they use it, participants will be asked some very brief questions about their experience using the app. Then, three times during the study, participants will be asked to fill out one or two questionnaires.
How long is the study for? How much time will it take?
The study lasts for 3 months. Participants can use the app as often as they wish but we recommend using it at least twice a week for about 30 minutes each time. The larger questionnaires are three times during the study should take no longer than 20 minutes. Overall, we would hope that participants would be able to contribute at least 4.5 to 5 hours to the research each month.
What do you hope the outcomes of the study will be?
First and foremost we hope that participants will experience some positive benefits of doing digital life story work using Book of You. We also hope to learn more about making apps like this more exciting, appealing and user friendly for people with dementia and their carers in the future.
This is an online study so people from all over the UK can take part without having to travel anywhere. The researchers are based in the Dementia Services Development Centre at Bangor University in North Wales.
Who are you looking to take part?
We are looking for people with dementia and carers of people with dementia who have access to an iPod Touch, iPad, iPad Mini or iPhone to take part. People with dementia can take part independently or with a carer.
Why are you interested in dementia research?
Dementia is very close to my heart and I felt helpless for a long time. By being involved in research I can help to make positive changes and hopefully make life a little bit better for people living with dementia and their carers.
